About WordPress Hacker
WordPress is a great piece of software, but the more I used it, the more I wanted to do with it. I searched all over the place and couldn’t find enough clear, useful information on how to hack WordPress. So I spent a bunch of time learning HTML, PHP, and CSS until I could pretty much hack WordPress into anything I wanted.
A bit more about this site
There are a million different ways to customize WordPress. In reality, all WordPress is, or any CMS for that matter, is a set of instructions that display web content in a certain way. WordPress just happens to display web content in a form that makes blogging really easy; but that doesn’t mean it can’t do other things…with a little tweaking of the code, you can make WordPress do anything you want.
Because its so easy to use, even for beginners and non-coders, WordPress has garnered quite a following. I wasn’t blogging for a week before I already wanted to tweak the design, layout, or functionality, but there was just too much I didn’t know at the time…it took a while before I could do anything useful, so, hopefully, the work I put into learning this CMS will help you save time customizing your blog or, for those intimidated by the code behind WordPress, I hope you’ll see that it’s really not that difficult to do some killer tricks without knowing a bunch of code. So, with this blog, I’m going to lay out some of the shortcuts, and make them easy and simple to follow so that you only learn what you have to to make the changes you want.
If you’re a WordPress guru and would like to share some of your expertise, get in touch with me and we’ll set up a guest post or two. If you’re not an expert, but you have something in mind you’d like to get WordPress to do and you can’t figure out how, post your question in the WordPress Hacker forums and we’ll see what we can do to get it answered for you.
If you know anyone who could benefit from the information here, shoot them an email and tell them about it. Now let’s start hacking this program to pieces.

Just learning Wordpress. Wondering – how do I change the images that appear at the top of the template?
I was also wondering whether I can incorporate NextGen gallery into the template (haven’t figured out where I am supposed to put the gallery = X tag)—thought maybe you would know.
Should have also told you that I am using the “This Just In” template
@Dave: The easiest way to change those images is to just replace the files themselves with your own inside /images/header_images
I don’t know anything about NextGen gallery so I couldn’t help you there.
I’m using the “Get Some” theme. How do I remove the “Ad Unit” images from the tops of my posts?
@Brandie King: You can find those images in index.php, single.php, and sidebar.php
Thank you so much John!
John,
I was going to ask you about replacing the ad unit area with an ad, because I am using the “get some” theme, just like Brandie, however I see that the answers are right here already.
How timely!
Well, Thanks for the cool theme idea, and for having helpful info posted on your blog as well. I enjoyed browsing your pages the other day and think its great what you contribute to the community of bloggers out there.
Keep up the good work.
Aaron

P.S. nice theme you have too!
John,
Wow, after checking out Brandie’s blog a moment ago. I realized that I do have another question for you sir… How can i get the nav links to show up for my pages and categories? I have been unable to do so through the dashboard. Is there something i am missing in the “get some” theme?
Hope you can help…
Thanks Again,
Aaron

Hi – I would like you to try out my new Wordpress plugin (http://www.fruityplugins.com). How do I get in touch? Please let me know. Thanks, Allen
I can download the files from your site. I can’t guarantee I’ll have a chance to check it out, but thanks for the heads up!

Tried to register on forum to post question but unable to – using http://design.icanlocalize.com/wordpress-cms-plug...
and unable to get the breadcrumb feature to show parent of a child page. All other functions listing pages work fine. Site is http://www.techresq.com
Hi there … just curious if you mind me creating a german translation of your “this-just_in” Theme?
Hi Sushi,
That would be great! If you wouldn’t mind shooting me an email first because I’d have a few quick questions for you at editor [a t) wphackr d o t c om. I’d appreciate it…thanks Sushi.
You got mail … and I would really appreciate to have your approval for the translation since the skin just fits perfectly for a non profit site I work on.
How?
1. How did you change your site page names to the proper names rather than [http://www.example.com/?page_id=7]
2. How can i hard code a home page if necessary for your theme “this just in” located at PonyClick
?
If I can possibly grab answers to those two important pieces, then big thanks to you.
Please post this question in the forums so others can benefit from it as well. Thanks!
using “this just in” .. first off a great theme and thank you very much for the design. I currently show only 2 tabs HOME & ABOUT and would love to create more of them. I thought creating a new page through the dashboard would also add new tab for it but I was wrong. How do I do this? Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks in advance!!

Please post this question in the forum.
John – is there anything about your “This Just in” wordpress theme that would wipe out our Google Rank – perhaps your tabs at the top. My wife is not happy with me and her 0 rank on Google. We can’t be sure that the rank changed when we switche to your theme from the Kubrick theme, but there are no other major changes we made, and it correlates in time with the cahnge to your theme. BTW – we like the theme
Nope. If anything your rank should improve. Especially over Kubrick. Sometimes if you change things a bit, Google shuffles things around and everything settles after a couple weeks. Give it some time…unless you made any other changes or did some shady link building or something, that’s probably what happened.
